MOGADISHU (HOL) - President Mohamed Farmaajo has appointed new army chiefs as the military ratchets up operations in southern parts of the country.
Villa Somalia announced Thursday the President had appointed Brigadier General Abdihamid Mohamed Dirir to head the grounds forces while Brigadier General Mohamed Barise becomes the new army commander.
Brigadier Dirir replaces General Odowaa Yusuf who was appointed in August as the new Chief of Staff.
The appointments which are seen as strategic reconfiguration of the military leadership comes amid heightened military offensives in Lower Shabelle and Lower Jubba regions.
SNA troops have in the last couple of months conducted major operations killing several Al-Shabaab militants and capturing new towns in the southern regions.
