Five soldiers killed in al-Shabaab attack in southern Somalia

MOGADISHU (HOL) - At least five government soldiers have been killed and several others sustained injuries after al-Shabaab attacked a Somali military base in southern Somalia.

According to reliable sources, heavily armed al-Shabaab militants on Wednesday stormed SNA base in Daynunay village on the outskirts of Baidoa town.

The attack which lasted for couple of hours has caused casualties on both sides.

SNA commander, Mohamed Omar Sheikh who spoke to local media said the forces managed to repelled the attack by the terror group.

"We have foiled an attempted attack on our base by al-Shabaab terror group. The group suffered heavy casualties and the base is still under our control," Mohamed said.

Mohamed confirmed death of five soldiers and injuries of eight others.

In a statement posted on Somalimemo, an al-Shabaab affiliate online media, the group claimed to have overran the base which is located in Daynunay village, some 18km south of Baidoa.

"The forces of Mujahideen have took control of military base belonging to apostates. The forces also succeeded to a commander named Yussuf Borweyne," the statement reads in part.

Somali authorities have not yet commented on the claims by al-Shabaab terror group.

Al-Shabaab has been fighting to topple Somalia's internationally recognized weak government for over decade.

With support of troops from African Union, Somali military succeeded to pushed al-Shabaab militants out of many major towns including the capital, Mogadishu.

The group which now controls parts of south and central Somalia carries out deadly bomb attacks and raids on government offices, restaurants frequented by government officials, military bases and African Union troops.
