WELLS (WGME) – Somali immigrants in Maine have found their dream farming land in Wales.
The Somali Bantu Community Association is teaming up with Agrarian Trust, an organization that provides help to secure lands for farming.
Together, they are raising money to help the Somali community purchase 107 acres of land for farming.
The director of the Somali group says owning the land means more to them than farming, it's important for their culture.
"We will have cultural space where we can do our drumming, our healing and all this stuff. It's not only farming, it will be a community center for our people," Somali Bantu Community Association Director Muhidin Libah said.
That land is worth more than $500,000, but they hope to raise more than $300,000.
The group's goal is to purchase the farming land in December.
