Lower House endorses law on medical practice in Somalia

MOGADISHU (HOL) - A bill regulating medical practice and training in Somalia has been approved by the country’s parliament.

The Lower House Monday endorsed the National Health Professionals Council Act paving way for further debate in the Upper House ahead of presidential assent.

The Bill which was tabled in the House in 2018 by the Ministry of Health was unanimously approved by the 275 member chamber.

Health Minister Fawzia Abikar hailed the passage of the bill.

The bill seeks to regulate medical practice and training in Somalia by setting standards on validation and issuance of certificates of practice for medical professionals and discipline.

The Council will also be responsible for regulating training and standardisation of medical colleges and universities in the country.

The Bill now proceed to the Upper House for further debate.
