Flights resume at Ugas Khalif Airport in Beledweyne

Wednesday July 22, 2020

BELEDWEYNE (HOL) - Operations at Ugas Khalif Airport in Beledweyne have resumed after close to a week suspension following the crash of an aircraft there.

Authorities in Beledweyne said Thursday flights had resumed at the facility following pleas by local officials.

Hiiraan governor Ali Jeyte had this week pleaded for reopening of the facility to facilitate delivery of humanitarian supplies in light of ongoing floods.

The deputy director of the airport Yusuf Diriye told journalists several flights had landed at the facility even as investigations into the crash last week are still ongoing.

“We have cleared airlines for landing and takeoff as we gradually resume operations following the July 14 incident,” Diriye said adding the facility was set for upgrades.

A Kenyan registered aircraft crash landed at the airport last week catching fire. None of the six crew on board were harmed.

The incident was the third one involving Kenyan airlines in Somalia since January.
