MOGADISHU (HOL) - All checkpoints within Mogadishu will henceforth be removed, city mayor Omar Filish has said in yet another pledge successive mayors have made with little success.
Filish who also doubles up as Banaadir regional governor said the move to remove the checkpoints was a result of improved security in the city and the need to relieve residents of the inconveniences.
“The public will feel that the changes reflect peace,” the mayor said. When he came to office in 2017, President Mohamed Farmaajo pledged to rid the city of the roadblocks but to date a number of roads within the city are sealed off by roadblocks."
Filish said the checkpoints will be moved outside the city.
Meanwhile, Filish has reiterated his push for the definition of the status of Mogadishu noting it was time residents of the Mogadishu got their own representation in parliament.
“Banaadir region deserves greater representation and significance like regional administrations in the country. The people of Mogadishu are seeking representation,” Filish said during a tour of the city Sunday.
President Farmaajo Saturday told Parliament Banaadir region should be considered for representation and urged the House to take up the matter.
