Security Council extends UNSOM mandate to August 31

Tuesday June 23, 2020

NEW YORK (HOL) - The UN Security Council has extended the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) until August this year.

The Council unanimously voted Monday to extend the term of the Mission until August 31, 2020 under resolution 2527 (2020).

UNSOM was established in 2013 by UNSC resolution 2102 with the mandate to provide policy advice to the Federal Government and the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) on peace-building and state-building.

A statement from the Council Monday noted it was also agreed the Secretary General will ‘continue to regularly provide oral updates and written reports every 90 days, as set forth in resolution 2461 (2019), with the next report due by 13 August on the situation on the ground and progress towards achieving key political benchmarks.’

The UN Security Council early this month extended the term of AMISOM for a further six months.
