MOGADISHU (Xinhua) -- Somali National Army (SNA) on Monday killed three al-Shabab militants in an operation in the southern region of Middle Juba, a military officer said.
Isma'il Abdi Malik, commander of SNA's 16th Unit told journalists that government forces launched an attack on a base used by the militants in the outskirt of Bu'ale town in the Middle Juba region.
"Following intelligence, our forces conducted an operation targeting a base where senior members of al-Shabab were meeting, we killed three of them during the operation," Malik said.
He added that one of those killed in the operation was a foreign operator from Mali. Locals told Xinhua they heard exchange of fire in the town.
The latest onslaught comes after Somali national forces killed nine al-Shabab militants in a fierce fight in Awdhigle town in the country's southern region of Lower Shabelle on May 7.
Southern regions of Somalia have been the theatre of the clashes between government forces and al-Shabab extremists since the militants
