AU Security Council proposes one year extension for AMISOM

Wednesday May 13, 2020

ADDIS ABABA (HOL) - The African Union has proposed a one-year term extension for its continental military force in Somalia.

Peace and Security Council Commissioner Smail Chergui this week told the Council it was imperative to continue AMISOM’s stay in Somalia to guard gains made thus far.

“We must guard jealously the hard-worn achievements in Somalia. Many Somalis, AMISOM and other bilateral partners have sacrificed their lives in the quest to make Somalis enjoy the peace which has been robbed from them over the last 30 years,” said Chergui.

The Commissioner said the achievements must not be allowed to go to waste and called for concerted support from international partners noting the need ‘to continue with a smooth, respectful and honorable transition.’

“It is for these reasons that the Commission recommends a one year extension of AMISOMs mandate, at its current strength.”

The UN Security Council is expected to deliberate the fate of AMISOM stay this month with a possible extension.

The Council has set 2021 as a timeline for significant troops withdrawal from Somalia to allow Somali Security Forces to take charge after over 10 years stay.

A further 1,000 AMISOM troops left Somalia in February bringing to 19,000 the number of AU forces in the country.
