Kenya closes border with Somalia over COVID19 imports

NAIROBI (HOL) - Kenya has closed its international border with Somalia following increased import of COVID19 cases.

President Uhuru Kenyatta declared closure of the border Saturday noting the number of COVID19 cases into the country from Somalia was fast increasing.

President Kenyatta said the closure of the border will affect all human and vehicular transport with effect from May 16. Cargo vehicles will however be exempted on condition that all the drivers are tested for the disease.

Kenya also closed its international border with Tanzania. Over 40 cases recorded this week alone were from Tanzania and Somalia.

Somalia currently has over 1200 cases with 53 fatalities.

Kenya recorded 49 cases Saturday bringing to over 800 the national tally.

President Kenyatta also extended the dusk to dawn curfew country for a further 21 days while movement into and outside of the capital Nairobi and Mombasa also remain in force.
