HARGEISA (HOL) - Omer Arteh Ghalib who served as Prime Minister of Somalia from 1991 to 1993 has died in his home in Somaliland. He was 89.
Family and friends said Ghalib died in Somaliland after he was hospitalized in the capital Hargeisa.
Before his stint at the Office of the Prime Minister, Ghliab served as Foreign Affairs Minister during the Said Barre era.
His son, Mohamed Omer Ghalib was recently cleared by Somaliland authorities to visit him.
The younger Ghalib was appointed deputy prime minister of Somalia in 2015.
Ghalib becomes the third former prime minister of Somalia to die this year.
Former prime ministers Nur Hassan Hussein and Ali Khalif Galeydh both died of COVID-19 in April and October respectively.
