Somalia’s political parties ‘welcome’ elections deal

Saturday September 19, 2020

MOGADISHU (HOL) - Political parties in Somalia have welcomed the electoral deal reached between the Federal Government and Federal Member States.

The Forum for National Parties (FNP) coalition and Wadajir Party said separately the agreement was a step forward to ensuring a transition happens within set timelines.

“The coalition welcomes the election modality agreement reached by the FGS and FMS,” FNP spokesman Senator Ilyas Hassan said.

“The FNP underscores its firm belief that peaceful transition through viable elections modality is crucial to avoid mandate extension-induced political and constitutional crisis.”

On its part, Wadajir party led by former Minister Abdirahman Abdishakur too welcomed the agreement but called for more stakeholder engagement and definition of electoral timelines.

“This agreement creates a new hope that the political transition in the country will be peaceful,” Wadajir said.

The party however said the elections dates must be specified. According to the agreement reached by President Mohamed Farmaajo and Regional Presidents, the elections process will start on November 1, 2020.
