Mogadishu (HOL) - A regional administration official in Lower Shabelle was killed in an explosion on Saturday.
Hassan Gudur, the Leego District Commissioner, was killed in Wanlaweyn town when a bomb fitted to his vehicle exploded near the police station in the town centre. His bodyguard was seriously wounded in the attack.
Somali government forces stationed in Lower Shabelle arrived on the scene last night to begin their investigation but have not yet made any arrests.
A separate attack occurred hours earlier in the Muuri neighbourhood that sits on the peripheries of Wanlaweyn town. The commander of the Ma’awisley militia was killed alongside three of his bodyguards after his home was targeted with a grenade attack.
The militant insurgency group Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the twin attacks through its media affiliates. The group controls large swaths of land in southern and central Somalia and has been waging a deadly insurgency against the internationally-backed federal government for over a decade.
