The Somali National Army (SNA) said its Danab special forces foiled an attempted attack on Friday by al-Shabab during a sting operation in the Lower Shabelle region in southern Somalia.
In Jilib Marka, a village in Lower Shabelle, Danab commandos detonated a vehicle packed with explosives, which militants intended to use to carry out attacks in Mogadishu, Radio Mogadishu reported.
SNA officials told the state-owned radio station that the troops bumped on Shabab militants who were hiding in the opposite direction.
Al-Shabab, which controls some rural parts in southern and central Somalia, continues to carry out high-profile attacks in Mogadishu and elsewhere.
Government troops and partner forces have intensified operations against al-Shabab, which was driven out of Mogadishu in 2011.
