No deal with Hassan Sheikh over presidential candidate, Sharif Ahmed says

Wednesday August 4, 2021

MOGADISHU (HOL) -  Former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed has dispelled rumours that he had struck a compromise deal with Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on who will stand for president.

Sharif said in a Facebook post the rumours were unfounded, noting there was no such agreement among candidates from their sub-clan.

"I want to make it clear that there is nothing about a meeting between professionals and politicians from the Mudulod clan on a compromise agreement with some of the candidates," the former head of state said.

Sharif was reacting to reports circulating on social media that he had struck a deal with Mohamud to become the presidential candidate in the upcoming presidential elections.

The two belong to the Forum for National Parties (FNP), an umbrella of six political parties. Sharif heads the Himilo party, while Mohamud is the UPD party leader.

Both former Presidents have expressed ambitions to compete for the presidency once again in the October 10 elections.
