Somali PM lauds role of media, urges more vigilance

Tuesday January 12, 2021

MOGADISHU (HOL) - Prime Minister Mohamed Roble has called on the media to remain steadfast and continue its role as the country heads for elections.

Speaking during a meeting with journalists in Mogadishu Roble praised the media for their role in Somalia’s recovery process and urged them to continue in educating and informing the public.

“I thank you for the important role you have played in the development of the country, especially in raising public awareness, and now I want you to play your part in the upcoming elections in the country,” the PM said.

The meeting comes amid rising cases of oppression of journalists in recent months. Several journalists were arrested and had their equipment confiscated by security forces last month while covering opposition protests in Mogadishu.

Local and international pressure groups have demanded the government climbs down on its attacks against journalists.

Somalia is currently preparing for elections which have since been delayed three times as the opposition and the he Government battle over questions of transparency of the process.
