MOGADISHU, (Xinhua) -- Somali National Army (SNA) on Tuesday killed eight al-Shabab militants in a security operation in the southern region of Gedo, a military officer confirmed.

Ali Mohamed Mohamoud, SNA's 43rd commander said the army launched an attack on bases run by al-Shabab fighters in Bardhere town, inflicting casualties on them.

"Our forces destroyed many bases used by the militants and killed eight al-Shabab fighters including the militants' operational commander in Bardhere town named Zakarie Sheikh," Mohamoud said.

The latest incident came amid sustained operations by the government forces against al-Shabab militants in the southern regions.
