GAROWE (HOL) - Somalia inched closer to breaking the ongoing electoral deadlock Wednesday night when two of its states which have held ground against the Federal Government acceded to pressure from the UN to name their respective poll committees.
Puntland and Jubbaland announced the State Independent Elections Team (SIET) members who will be charged with overseeing the election of Members of Parliament (MPs) through a clan delegates system. Each team is made up of eight members.
The announcement of the elections committees is expected to ease the gridlock which has seen both senate and Lower House elections postponed three times. The delays have already eaten into the presidential election deadline which according to the Provisional Constitution comes to a close on February 8.UN chief in Somalia James Swan has pressured the two leaders to vacate their conditions and allow for elections to take place. His has visited all the Federal Member States safe for Jubbaland which he is expected to land on Saturday.
