Embattled Jubbaland security minister sacked

Wednesday March 24, 2021

KISMAYO (HOL) - Jubaland President Ahmed Madobe has sacked his embattled security minister Abdirashid Janan in what could be a concession in talks with President Mohamed Farmaajo.

Jubaland's Office of the President said in a letter dated March 20 that Janan had been relieved of his duties.

"Following discussions with the deputy president of Jubbaland state, the president of Jubbaland state sacked Abdirashid Hassan Abdinuur, Jubbaland Security Minister," the letter read in part.

Janan's sacking comes as he is reportedly negotiating with Somalia's federal government. Janan told the BBC that talks were underway on Tuesday, but they have not reached the terms of his surrender.

In late January, Janan led his militia into battle against the Somali National Army in Beled Hawo. The ensuing gun battle led to the deaths of 11 people and the surrender of nearly dozens of Jubaland fighters. He threatened to launch a similar attack against Somali troops last month.

Janan is wanted by Somalia's federal government for alleged human rights violations in the Gedo region he committed while security minister.
