GAROWE (HOL) - Puntland police chief Hassan Abdi Yare was sacked on Monday evening, barely a few hours after meeting the Federal Indirect Elections Team chairman, Mohamed Irro.
A statement from the Puntland presidency said brigadier Mohamed Hashi had been appointed to replace Yare following consultations with Deputy president Ahmed Karaash.
The circumstances surrounding the removal of Abdi Yare remained unclear, but sources said he might have been dropped following his association with the Federal Government.
As Head of the Puntland Elections Security Committee, Abdi Yare met Monday afternoon with Irro, whom he briefed on the preparations for the elections.
The development could come in the same evening when the minister of security, Mohamed Dhabanad, cancelled a public forum that Irro addressed.
Abdi Yare was appointed to the position in April 2020. His successor, General Mohamed, was previously the Head of police in Bosaso port.
