The Somali National Army’s (SNA) 60 Unit killed two Al-Shabaab militants and recovered weapons after conducting a special operation at a village in Lower Shabelle region, southern Somalia, officials said Saturday.

SNA said in a brief statement that the army conducted the sting operation on Friday night at Gorsarow near Bulamarer town where the troops killed two Al-Shabaab terrorists who were found planting landmines along the road.

“The terrorists were experts in mine action and were killed while planting landmines to harm innocent people. The army also seized their equipment including AK-47 rifles, batteries and remote controls used for making explosive devices,” the statement said.

The area is about 125 km south of the capital Mogadishu and there is no immediate comment from the al-Shabaab militants on the latest onslaught by the SNA.

In a related development, at least two people were killed and another injured after a landmine blast in Garasbaley district, about 13 km south of the capital Mogadishu on Saturday.

A district official, who declined to be named, told Xinhua by phone that the roadside blast targeted innocent civilians around the area.

Al-Shabaab militants have killed a number of Garasbaley district officials in such attacks in the past, but the group which is fighting to overthrow the government has not claimed responsibility so far.
