Beledweyne (HOL)- Beledweyne's Ugas Khalif International Airport officially opened -its new terminal on Monday.
The Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation of the Federal Government of Somalia, Duran Ahmed Farah and the Governor of Hiran region Ali Jeyte Osman cut the ribbon to open the new terminal section, welcoming future travellers to the Hiiraan capital.
The opening ceremony of the terminal section of the airport was attended by the Director of the Somali Civil Aviation Authority Ahmed Hassan Maalim, the Deputy Director of the Somali Presidency and other officials.
Also in attendance were top officials from the Hiiraan regional administration, traditional elders and prominent community members in Beledweyne.
Officials who spoke at the inauguration ceremony of the new terminal at Ugas Khalif airport all said that they were happy with the new construction of the terminal and said they were optimistic about future development projects in the area.
For years the Ugas Khalif Airport suffered from severe flooding, which would often lead to airport closures. The most recent incident was in mid-May when torrential rains led to serious transport disruptions. Residents have called on their officials for years to fix the problem.
