Jubaland looks to complete Upper House elections

Tuesday October 19, 2021

Kismayo (HOL) - Jubaland has released the names of the candidates who will be vying for the remaining four federal senatorial seats.

Jubbaland's State President Ahmed Mohamed Islam Ahmed Madobe has released the list of the candidates on Tuesday.

Eight candidates will contest for the four seats, and two of those seats will be reserved for four women candidates. Jubaland has yet to elect a woman to the Upper Houe despite committing to a 30% quota.

Jubaland was the first Federal Member State to begin electing senators to Somalia's incoming parliament. However, the process has been fraught with delays since it started in late July.

Somalia's Prime Minister, Mohamed Hussein Roble, has called on the leaders of Somalia's regional states to expedite the Upper House elections so that the focus can shift to the more complex process of electing MP's to the Lower House.

The international community is also concerned about electoral delays. This week, the US State Department said that Somalia should hold elections by the year-end, although that seems highly unlikely.
