Badhan elders distance themselves from Sanaag evictions

Wednesday October 20, 2021

Nairobi (HOL) - Badhan elders in the Sanaag region said they are sorry that the Somaliland government is harassing Somalis in their area.

"Our position is that whether the people are coming from South West or from elsewhere, Somaliland should not view them with suspicion. We are sorry for the people who have been forcibly relocated and harassed," said one of the elders who spoke to the media.

The elders added that the people of South Western Somalia who are being persecuted in the Sanaag region could settle in their areas and be welcomed.

The elders appealed to Erigavo intellectuals and religious leaders to protect the property of deportees in the city.

"Save the property of these men. People have houses in Erigavo, and the clerics should focus on this task. There is little time left, and we will welcome them to our land."

Only four days remain before the Somaliland government's deadline for Somali's to evacuate the Sanaag region under threat of arrest.

So far, over 7,000 Somali's have been forcibly displaced from their homes in Somaliland. Somali officials have called on Somaliland authorities to cease the evictions.
