Abdullahi Ahmed Tarabi has been re-elected as President of the Somali National Olympic Committee (NOC).

Tarabi, the incumbent who first took the top job in 2013, was elected to the role at a meeting in Mogadishu, following a show of hands.

He will serve a three-year term until 2024 as the election was delayed by a year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ahmed Abdi Hassan Watac has been elected as first vice-president to support Tarabi.

The second vice-president is Fadumo Ali Nur - ensuring female representation at the body - while Mohamed Abdow Haji was appointed secretary general.

Somalia sent two athletes to the delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games this year.

Ali Idow Hassan raced in the men's 1500 metres, finishing 10th in his heat and not advancing to the next round.

Women's featherweight boxer Ramla Ali received a bye in the first round but then lost her last-16 bout to Romania's Maria Nechita.

Britain's running legend Sir Mo Farah, the back-to-back Olympic 5,000m and 10,000m champion at London 2012 and Rio 2016, was born in Somalia before moving to the United Kingdom at the age of eight.

Somalia has never won an Olympic medal.

In 2012, the country's NOC President Aden Yabarow Wiish was killed in a suicide bomb blast in Mogadishu.
