Ugandan President says bomb attacks terror-related

Tuesday October 26, 2021

Kampala (HOL)- Uganda President Yoweri Museveni has said that a series of bombings in Kampala claiming a total of three lives in two days was terror-related.

On Monday, two people were killed while several others were injured in a bus explosion in Kampala, Uganda.

On Saturday, a bomb exploded in Kwata Zone in Kampala, killing a 20-year-old waitress and injuring three people. Police said the bomb was packed with nails and shrapnel.

The bus belongs to Swift Safaris Bus Company of registration number UAU 989T, and it was travelling from Kampala heading to Bushenyi located in Western Uganda.

"The incident happened in Mpigi District in central Uganda at around 5 pm," Police spokesperson Fred Enanga said.

Just minutes after the incident, bomb experts were dispatched to Lungala, located along the Kampala- Masala highway.

"The scene has been cordoned off pending a thorough assessment and investigation by the bomb experts."

The wounded were taken to a nearby hospital, where they were listed in critical condition.

The two incidents that have taken place in two days attracted the attention of President Yoweri Museveni.

Uganda's Head of State said that the bombings are an "apparent act of terrorism."

"The information I have is that three people came and left a package in Kaveera which later on exploded, killing one person and injuring five others," Museveni said, adding that it seemed to be a terrorist act, but we shall get the perpetrators.

He said he had issued orders, and detectives are investigating the scene and sharing every detail with the public.

The last time a terrorism act took place in Kampala was in 2010, and it left 70 people killed. Al Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack saying it was retaliation for Uganda's deployment of peacekeeping troops in Somalia, which is its headquarters.

In a statement posted in an affiliated Telegram channel late on Sunday, Islamic State claimed responsibility for Saturday evening's bomb attack that killed at least one person.
