Hargeisa (HOL) - Police in Somaliland have arrested two men for allegedly stealing $7,000 from a taxi driver's phone.
Police say the men allegedly asked the cab driver to make a phone call before sending themselves money.
"A little boy asked to use my phone to dial a number. He said that his grandmother had just passed away. The boy asked the person on the other line to send him money. I told the boy not to have money sent to my phone," said the cab driver.
"After he handed me the phone, I looked at my balance and found that he had taken $ 7,000 from me. "
A New Hargeisa police station commander announced that the two suspects had been arrested.
"On the 26th of this month, a man named Sahayb Abdillahi and a man named Hassan Mohamed were arrested for allegedly extracting money from people's mobile phones," he said.
He also said they are targeting taxi drivers in Dhaweeye, who ask for someone to call and then get all his information and the money pin attached.
Somaliland police warn the public not to let anyone use their phones to prevent hijacking.
