Suicide bomber strikes near military base in Mogadishu

Friday September 24, 2021

Mogadishu (HOL) - A suicide bomber was the lone casualty in Mogadishu on Friday afternoon after he blew himself up on a busy street, according to senior Somali police.

Somali Police spokesman Abdifatah Aden Hassan said that the bomber struck just after 3 PM local time between the Medina Hospital and Villa Baidoa.

"At around 15:03 PM, a suicide bomber blew himself up between Medina Hospital and Villa Baidoa, and there were no casualties. except for the one who killed himself. "

Hassan believes that the bomber was targeting senior military officers stationed at the General Dhagabadan military training camp.

Although no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, it bears all the hallmarks of the militant insurgency group Al-Shabaab who have intensified their suicide bombing campaign against government forces in recent months.

Earlier this month, a  suicide bomber killed 11 soldiers and civilians when he detonated his device inside a crowded tea shop in Mogadishu's Wadajir neighbourhood.
