Hargeisa (HOL) - Firefighters in downtown Hargeisa battled for several hours on Friday night, battling a large fire in the Waheen market.
The fire engulfed nearly the entire market, destroying at least 2,000 businesses and causing millions of dollars in damages.
After battling the blaze for several hours, firefighters successfully put out the fire by Saturday morning.
The death toll in the fire is not yet known, as officials are still assessing the damages. The cause of the fire is also yet to be determined.
Hargeisa's Mayor, Abdikarim Ahmed Mooge, has appealed to Somaliland residents and international friends to provide assistance.Several groups in the diaspora have already begun mobilizing to raise money for those affected by the fire through crowdfunding services.
The fire broke out close to 7:30 local time, just hours before it was confirmed that Saturday would be the first day of the Holy month of Ramadan.
