Mogadishu (HOL) - At least ten al Shabaab militants were killed and 13 others injured during security operations in Janale district in the Lower Shabelle region on Tuesday.
Somali National Army chief General Odowa Rage told state-owned media that the militants were killed in Kilijiido.
He added that the country's armed forces seized weapons and took down illegal checkpoints the group was using to extort residents.
General Odawaa Yusuf said security operations are currently underway across the country to eradicate Al-Shabaab.
Last month, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud announced that his government would launch an offensive against the militant insurgency group to liberate areas under its control.
The Al Qaeda-linked group exerts influence over large swathes of territory in south and central Somalia.
