Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Prime Minister Hamse Abdi Barre and Speakers of parliaments have expressed condolences on behalf of the Somali people to the poet Mohamed Ibrahim Warsame Hadrawi, who passed away in Hargeisa on Thursday at 79.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said Hadrawi was one of the pillars of the Somali artistic scene and played a significant role in preserving culture and developing the Somali language and literature. Mohamud described Hadrawi as a symbol of unity and peace, adding that his death is felt in every Somali home.

"Poet Mohamed Ibrahim Warsame Hadrawi was one of the role models of the Somali community who made efforts to educate the community and develop the intelligence of the Somali people," the president said.

Prime Minister Hamza Barre also extended his condolences to all the family, relatives, the art and literature community and the Somali people and asked Allah to grant him his Jannah.

Speakers of the Lower and Upper Houses of the parliament, Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nuur Madobe and Abdi Hashi Abdullahi, said in separate statements that the poet was the center of Somali art and poetry and played a significant role in raising public awareness and encouraging nationalism.

Hadrawi's illuminations on patriotism, love, and faith captured the hearts of millions of Somalis. His work, which numbers over 200 poems, cut across a political, clan and economic classes. Hadrawi is to many Somalis what Shakespeare is to the English.
