Heavy fighting reported in Lower Shabelle region

Monday December 19, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - Heavy fighting was reported between Somali government forces backed by AU troops and al Shabab militants on Monday morning in Lower Shabelle’s Qoryoley district.

The fighting began after al-Shabaab militants attacked a base with government soldiers and Ugandan troops serving under the ATMIS mission in the district, according to residents.

The Ugandan troops fired heavy mortar shells in response to the attack.

The casualties are unknown.

The Somali government and ATMIS officials declined to comment on the hour-long attack.

Somali government forces backed by the local clan militia forces inflicted heavy casualties on al Shabab in the ongoing offensive against al Shabab in the Middle Shabelle, Lower Shabelle and Hiiraan regions.

The Somali government reported on December 15 that it conducted an operation against al-Shabab in the vicinity of the Juhay and Gulane villages in the Hirshabelle State, killing 88 al-Shabab fighters in the 48-hour operation.

The operation was conducted in collaboration with international partners and may have involved a US airstrike.
