Candidate attacked in Garowe will stand for electionGarowe (HOL) - A candidate running for Somalia’s Lower House of Parliament will stand for election on Wednesday despite being nearly assassinated on Tuesday.

Mohamed Dheere suffered minor gunshot wounds to his arm after gunmen from his clan reportedly opened fire on him and his bodyguards over allegations of electoral rigging. According to sources, the attackers were incensed that the seat was earmarked for Dheere following a backroom deal he made with President Deni’s regional government in Puntland.I

Two of Dheere’s bodyguards were injured in the attack. 

The Puntland’s state electoral commission is expected to hold elections six seats in Garowe, the capital of Puntland State of Somalia.

Security at the polling station has been beefed up following yesterday's violence in Garowe. Roadblocks have also been put up in critical areas around the city. 

Puntland has faced criticism in recent days due to the management of the electoral process in the region.
