Mogadishu: Banadiri community elect five members to Lower House

Friday February 25, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - The Banadiri community has concluded in the election of five seats in the incoming Somali parliament in Mogadishu on Friday, despite complaints of electoral fraud from clan elders.

The election was pushed back several times in recent months.

Somalia's ambassador to Pakistan, Khadija Mohamed Al-Nakhzoumi, won the HOP034 which was previously held by Khalid Maow.  Al-Nakhzoumi is the wife of the former Galmudug President Abdikarim Hussein Guled.

Former Hamarweyne district commissioner Omar Sharif (Jeeg) won HOP266, previously held by Bibi Khalif Mohamed, while former Benadir Regional Police Commander Mohamud Abdulkadir Jeego was won seat HOP84.

Abdirahman Abdulkadir Adde won HOP105 won the seat, and Mohamed Nur Abukar won sear HOP265.

As with many other elections in Somalia, Friday’s vote was not without controversy. On Thursday, a member of the electoral committee, Abdalla Omar Salah, has resigned in protest over what he called widespread vote-rigging. However, a committee appointed by the prime minister is purported to have resolved the clan elders' grievances.
