Somalia among top three defaulters at the UN

Thursday January 13, 2022

MOGADISHU (HOL) - Somalia has once again been listed as a top defaulter by the UN following failure to meet its annual financial obligations to the global body.

According to the UN Secretary General's report to the member states on January 12, Somalia is among 11 countries that have failed to submit their annual fees to the UN.

Somalia owes the UN $1.4 million and is among the top three defaulters. Others are Iran with a debt of $18 million and Venezuela which leads the pack with a debt of $39 million.

Article 9 of the UN Charter obliges member states to remit annual fees to the UN to enable it run its global operations which include peacekeeping and humanitarian aid.

However, Somalia remains protected by the Charter from being denied to vote owing to its assessed inability to submit its contributions due to economic challenges.
