Somaliland government, opposition groups began talks on election dispute

Thursday July 7, 2022

Hargeisa (HOL) - Somaliland government authorities and opposition groups started talks on the election dispute on Wednesday after twelve politicians from opposition parties were released from Mandheera Prison in Hargeisa on Tuesday.

The chairman of the house of elders and the mediation committee, Saleban Mohamud Adan, opened the meeting, saying Wednesday’s meeting was just the beginning of the negotiations. The parties agreed to continue their discussions after Eid.

Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi Irro, a presidential candidate for the Wadani Party, vowed to respect whatever decision reached by the mediation committee.

The chairman of the UCID party, Faisal Ali Warabe, said that the matter should be settled through the Somaliland consultation process.

"Set a time for us after Eid to save our country from trouble and terrify our adversaries. Let's stay together because, as usual, we used to reconcile in the last hour", added Faisal.

Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi ordered the self-appointed committee, the chairman of the house of elders, and all who collaborated to bring the government and opposition groups to the negotiating table to settle the protracted election dispute.
