Somaliland Police warns opposition holding unauthorized protests

Sunday July 31, 2022

Hargeisa (HOL) - Somaliland Police has warned opposition parties to hold unauthorized demonstrations after opposition parties insisted on continuing to protest, demanding the election be held on time.

"Unauthorized demonstrations are illegal, and police are present to prevent illegal activities," a police officer said in a video released on Facebook.

The police commissioner called on the public to help the police in stemming the demonstrations.

Somaliland's opposition parties plan to protest against the postponement of the presidential election, which they want to take place on November 13. Election talks between opposition political parties and the government, which were aimed at resolving the dispute in the elections, collapsed earlier this month

In June, police arrested more than a dozen politicians from opposition parties during an anti-government protest in Hargeisa. They were released after a mediation committee and members of the house of elders met with Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi.
