Somaliland’s election commission disbands following presidential poll dispute

Hargeisa (HOL) - The Somaliland Electoral Commission has completely disbanded following a dispute ahead of the controversial presidential election scheduled for November 13th.

The three remaining commission members, including the newly elected chairman Kaltuun Sheikh Hassan Abdi, have submitted their resignation letters to the President of Somaliland on Saturday.

The commission members have been resigning over the past few weeks. Most recently, the commission chairman, Abdirashid Mohamud Ali Rio-raac, officially announced his resignation on the 1st of this month.

The chairman of the opposition UCID party said it is unfortunate the disbandment of the commission, and they will hold a meeting to save Somaliland and its security.

In recent months, there has been a lot of dispute inside the commission. Former commission chairman Abdirashid Mohamud Ali Rio-rac refuted that President Bihi was involved in the argument among committee members, adding that the conflict had been going on for a long time and that the president was unaware of it.

Somaliland police have been placed on high alert following protests called by Somaliland opposition parties; nonetheless, the opposition parties have agreed to hold the planned peaceful demonstrations.
