A committee persuades Somaliland opposition groups to suspend scheduled protests

Friday June 10, 2022

Hargeisa (HOL) - A self-appointed mediation committee persuaded the Somaliland opposition to suspend their planned protests on Saturday and return to the negotiating table.

A spokesman for the committee said that after meetings with government and opposition leaders, they had agreed to suspend the protests on Saturday and end the use of inflammatory rhetoric.

"They agreed to come to the negotiating table by following the national constitution and Islamic Sharia law, to suspend the protests called by the opposition parties during the mediation process, and to stop the divisive rhetoric," they said.

Somaliland police on Thursday morning called off a protest rally organized by opposition parties, injuring at least ten people, mostly opposition members, and detaining more.

The committee, comprised of traditional elders, Sheikhs, and business people from all regions of Somaliland, has been working on getting the two sides to the negotiating table to resolve the controversy over the controversial elections. The committee confirmed that a protest against the government took place in Hargeisa on Thursday when they were meeting with government officials, and later the meeting failed.

The Somaliland Electoral Commission has completely disbanded following a dispute ahead of the controversial presidential election scheduled for November 13th.

The three remaining commission members, including the newly elected chairman Kaltuun Sheikh Hassan Abdi, have submitted their resignation letters to the President of Somaliland on Saturday.
