Somaliland government arraigns journalists and politicians in court

Thursday June 16, 2022

Hargeisa (HOL) - Maroodi Jeh Regional Court sentenced twelve politicians from Somaliland’s opposition parties and two journalists arrested during the June 9 protest in Hargeisa to seven days in jail after being arraigned on Thursday morning.

An official from the Wadani party accused the government of violating the law, saying the politicians and journalists had been in jail for longer than the law allows.

The politicians, including Wadani party deputy chairman Ahmed Omar Abdillahi Hamarje, secretaries, deputies, governors, and other prominent opposition party officials, were arrested seven days ago after the protest against the government in Hargeisa.

HCTV journalist Muhyadin Adan Ismail and Saab TV journalist Hamse Mohamud Mohamed Guelleh were also arrested by the police for reporting on the protest.

Somaliland police called off a protest rally organized by opposition parties, injuring at least ten people, mostly opposition members, and detaining more. Recently, the Somaliland Electoral Commission has completely disbanded following a dispute ahead of the controversial presidential election scheduled for November 13.
