Wednesday March 23, 2022

MOGADISHU (HOL) - At least three people were killed, more than three others injured when two simultaneous explosions rocked Beledweyne, the capital of Hiiraan region tonight.

The first blast was carried out by a suicide bomber wearing a vest inside Lamagalaay camp, killed female MP Amina Mohamed Abdi, and former Member of Parliament Ali Abdi Dhuhul.

Both were candidates for two different Lower House seats. Aamin was in Beledweyne to campaign for her-election for seat HOP135, while Dhuhul was also among those running for the HOP058 seat.

Aamina had been known for her campaigning to find the missing intelligence agent Ikran Tahlil and was an outspoken MP.

The second blast took place at a security checkpoint and no casualties were reported.

Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo and Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble have condemned the attack and expressed condolences to the families of those killed.

Prime Minister Roble has ordered a thorough investigation into the killing of the MPs, adding that lawmaker Amina was an example of representing the people and pursuing justice, and serving her people and country to the best of her ability.

No group has yet claimed the responsibility for the attack but the president has blamed al Shabaab for the attack.

The attack comes only hours after al Shabaab attacked Mogadishu’s heavily guarded international airport Wednesday, where they have killed six people. The dead include a Somali national and five foreigners. The two gunmen were killed by security forces.
