Blast targeting SNA commander kills 10 soldiers in southern Somalia

Sunday May 1, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - A Somali National Army commander survived a landmine in the Middle Shabelle region on Friday night, but 10 of his bodyguards were killed, a witness and officials confirmed on Saturday.

Col. Saney Abdulle suffered minor injuries in the explosion that targeted his convoy on the road between Bal'ad and Golaley.

The bodies of the dead soldiers were taken to Jowhar town, while the wounded were returned to Mogadishu.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack; however, the militant insurgency group Al-Shabaab has repeatedly used improved explosive devices in attacks against Somali government forces.

The convoy was heading to Jowhar, where the election of Hirshabelle's remaining lower house seats will take place today.

Colonel Saney Abdulle rose to national prominence last spring when he led a battalion of federal government troops to protest President Farmajo's controversial two-year term extension.
