Somali parliament speaker warns army commanders to avoid politics

Tuesday May 3, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - The new speaker of Somalia's lower chamber of parliament, Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur Madobe, on Tuesday warned security commanders not to be involved in politics as the country's long-overdue election process comes to the final stage.

The speaker of the lower house, who presided over a security meeting in Mogadishu, stated that army commanders should follow his orders regarding election security until the president is elected.

On Monday, Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble emphasized that the country's security situation has worsened over the years, adding that those responsible were preoccupied with private interests.

Somalia's lawmakers concluded the parliament's leadership election this week and are now slated to elect a new president in the coming weeks.
