Ethiopian Animal Health Institute (EAHI) today completed a
training on laboratory quality assurance and Capacity Building for Animal
Health Professionals from Puntland State of Somalia, the Ministry of
Agriculture of Ethiopia said.
The intensive training on laboratory quality assurance and
capacity building was conducted from April 29 –May 08, 2022 which was organized
by Ethiopian Animal Health Institute and Ministry of Livestock and Animal
Husbandry under Water for Agro-pastoral productivity and Resilience (Biyole
Project) in Puntland.
The training mainly focused on the requirements of ISO 17025
standards such as general requirement, structural requirement, resource
requirement, process requirement and management system requirement.
At the same time, practical training on Serological,
Molecular and bacteriological tests were delivered linking with quality
management system of the international standard.
Speaking on the closing ceremony of the training, the
representative of State Minster of Livestock and Fishery Resource Development
Sector of Ministry of Agriculture, D/r Yohanis Girma stated that neighbor
countries collaboration is very critical to prevent and control trans boundary
animal disease as well as to develop and grow together.
Nowadays, since International livestock trade or market
requirement is very critical, we need to wok together closely and harmonize our
policy, strategy, method, standard and how to implement laboratory tests, D/r
Yohanis said.
D/r Yohanis also urged on the trainees to implement the experience
they have shared from Ethiopian Animal Health Institute when they return to
their country.
Minister of Livestock and Animal Husbandry of Puntland State
of Somalia Mr. Mohamed Abdulahi on his part indicated that they will work with
the FDRE Ministry of Agriculture especially with the Livestock Sector and
Ethiopian Animal Health Institute strengthening their collaboration in the
future on certain areas such as trans boundary animal diseases and livestock
trade promotion.
Mentioning this training is not the first and the last in
Ethiopia, the Minister added that collaboration working, knowledge and
experience sharing will continue between the two countries.
According to General Director of Animal Health Institute D/r
Tasfaye Rufael, the Institute has been working on different capacity building
such as serology, molecular and sequencing which is even not found in another
lab of around the western part.
It is not only working different activities in Ethiopia but
also works as a reference laboratory for eastern African countries and supports
African laboratories. At the end of the ceremony, certificates have been handed
over to trainees.
