Former electoral delegate shot dead in Beledweyne

Mogadishu (HOL) - Armed men shot and killed an electoral delegate on Saturday night in Beledweyne, the capital of the Hiiran region.

Abdirashid Mohamed Gedi, a delegate who was a delegate who participated in the election for HOP058, was attacked in the Koshin neighbourhood. His killers fled after the shooting and were not apprehended.

‎Somali police forces arrived at the murder scene after the killing and collected Gedi's body, although no one was arrested. ‎

‎The commander of the Baeedweyne police station, Abdi-Bashar Hussein, said that they had just begun conducting investigations into the assassination but said that the murder was likely linked to the militant insurgency group Al-Shabaab.

Hussein defended the Beledweyne police force's record and insisted that the city was still safe.

"I've been a commander in Beledweyne for four months, and in that time, there have been four murders - two of which we have solved. We are doing our job, and the police patrol the city every night."

‎In Baledweyne, the capital of the Hiran region, There are often planned killings targeting prominent individuals in Beledweyne and the surrounding areas. Several of the high-profile assassinations are attributed to Al-Shabaab.

Gedi is the second electoral delegate to be shot dead following the parliamentary elections. Last month, gunmen in Mogadishu shot and killed Yusuf Dahir Kheyre, a well-known peace activist.

No arrests have been made in Kheyre's murder.
