Madobe says federal cooperation restored in Jubbaland

Saturday May 21, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - President of Jubbaland Ahmed Mohamed Islam Madobe says that all support and development services that had been suspended in the Gedo region for the past years at the federal and Jubbaland levels have been restored.

Speaking in Kismayo on Friday, the president said that the formation of local councils would start in the Garbaharey district, the capital of the Gedo region, as the local community would elect their representatives.

President Ahmed Madobe added that his administration has significantly suffered from conflicts created by the former federal government in the Gedo region. He said that Jubbaland state would resolve the challenges he described were self-interested but not relating to the local community.

The relationship between Jubbaland and the federal government deteriorated after the federal government deployed federal troops in the Gedo region, where the army later clashed with Jubbaland security forces, as the Jubbaland president increased his vocal criticism of outgoing president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo.

32 MPs were elected from the Gedo region in two separate elections in Elwak and Garbaharey. Still, later the Lower House leadership eventually certified the 16 lawmakers elected from the Elwak district, supported by the Jubbaland president and the Prime Minister.

Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was elected by Somalia's members of parliament on Sunday in the capital Mogadishu, defeating the outgoing president Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed Farmajo.

Jubbaland President Ahmed Mohamed Islam Madobe thanked the outgoing president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo for conceding the election result. He commended the Prime Minister for his managing role in the country's indirect elections.
