Mogadishu (HOL) - A prominent traditional elder was assassinated in Middle Shabelle's Adale district on Tuesday.
Elder Mukhtar Ahmed Mohamed, the Chief Elder for the Adow Uul region in Adale, was instrumental in resolving a conflict between two warring clans in the Adale district.
According to media reports, he was killed while mediating a shootout.
HirShabelle President Ali Gudlawe Hussein expressed his condolences to the people of the Middle Shabelle area following the elder's death.
Former HirShabelle President Mohamed Abdi Ware also condemned the attack, claiming that his "point bank shooting" and the injury of the Adale District Commissioner were "an Al-Shabaab project designed to derail the fight against the terrorists" and that the incident was a personal affront to both President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and HirShabelle leader Gudlawe.
You must act. "This has to stop!"
Clan clashes in the Adale district killed 50 people and destroyed homes in the affected communities.
Elders from the Middle Shabelle region have recently been involved in efforts to halt the fighting and bring the warring parties to the negotiating table for a peaceful resolution.
