Mogadishu (HOL) - The Somali government said its security forces foiled an al-Shabab attack in a recently liberated village in Galgadud's central region on Friday morning, killing several al-Shabab terrorists.
According to residents, the attack began with three explosions and was followed by fierce fighting in Qayib village. The Somali Ministry of Information said that anti-Shabaab clan militias aided the Somali government forces in repelling the attack.
Since the government and local forces ousted Al-Shabaab last month, the group has attempted to retake the village several times.
For the second time in 24 hours, al-Shabab attacked the armed forces' position in El-Dhere Burale village, located on the border between Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle region, which was a strategic area for the militants.
On Wednesday, the country's National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), backed by Somalia's international partners, killed over 49 al-Shabab terrorists during an operation against al-Shabaab in the village of Bulo-Madino, in the Lower Shabelle region.
