Saturday October 1, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre and former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo have expressed their condolences over the killing of Mogadishu's Police Commissioner, Farhan Mohamoud Adan 'Qarole' in a landmine explosion in the Middle Shabelle region.

The explosion killed the commander, his two bodyguards, and Somali state media’s police correspondent occurred on Friday morning near Bal'ad district, 35km north of Mogadishu.

President Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamza said that Brigadier General Farhan Mohamud Adan and the soldiers who died were committed to liberating the country from al Shabab to give their people a dignified life.

"Brigadier General Farhan Mohamud Adan and other martyred soldiers have sacrificed their time and lives to help the Somali people live in peace, and they have put in a lot of effort to eradicate the terrorists," said President Hassan Sheikh.

"We are never disappointed that we lost a legend and two who were willing to die for their country," Prime Minister Hamza added, "but we take courage and are on the right path."

Former Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo also extended his condolences over the killing of the commander and his bodyguards.

"I have learnt with sadness the tragic loss of our Son General Farhan Qarole, A gallant who has bravely remained on the front line in the war against Alshabaab. He sacrificed his life to save many lives & I ask my fellow citizens to pray for him & his family at this time of grief," he said.

Sources say that Qarole's convoy struck a roadside bomb that the militant group planted before evacuating the Basra area, a strategic region that connects the Lower and Middle Shabelle.

Qarole survived at least two previous assassination attempts while Banadir's police chief, including an attack in July 2021 that killed nine people and a recent attack days before the presidential election in May that killed eight.
