President Mohamud sits down with Museveni to discuss security, trade

Monday October 10, 2022

Kampala (HOL) - President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Sunday, where they discussed regional security and economic cooperation.

Mohamud was in Kampala to commemorate Uganda's 60th anniversary of its independence.

According to a statement from Villa Somalia, the two east African leaders discussed Somalia's ongoing offensive against Al Shabaab.

President Museveni praised the Somali military and government for its recent successes against the Al Qaeda-linked insurgency group and promised additional support from Uganda, the largest contingent in African Union forces in Somalia.

Since coming to power in May, President Mohamud has worked to strengthen relations with Uganda, a key member of the  East African Community (EAC). It is his second major trip to Kampala this year.

In August, Somalia and Uganda signed MoUs to cooperate further in defence, diplomacy, trade and investment.

After being rejected over a decade ago, Somalia recently renewed its bid to join the seven-nation intergovernmental bloc.

Ugandan strongman President Museveni promised earlier this year to back Somalia's bid to join the EAC, which has faced stiff opposition from Kenya and Tanzania in the past.
